DI Ray

Discover DI Ray, a refreshing and necessary addition to the detective drama genre, that sees the talented and acclaimed Parminder Nagra (13 Reasons Why, ER, Bend It Like Beckham), give an impressive, powerful performance as the titular lead. Created and written by Line of Duty star, and one-to-watch scribe Maya Sondhi (Ackley Bridge, EastEnders) with Jed Mercurio as Exec Producer, this riveting and groundbreaking new series is set to arrive on DVD this July courtesy of Acorn Media International, following its transmission on ITV.

After a heroic arrest brings her to the attention of the decision makers on the force, DI Rachita Ray (Nagra) a British Asian policewoman is promoted to homicide... But her initial excitement on the promotion is quickly quashed by the underlying feeling that she landed the role as a box-ticking exercise, rather than on her merit as a detective.

Assigned to investigate a suspected honour killing of a young Muslim man, she quickly realises the two suspects - brothers from a British Hindu family - aren't guilty. The evidence against them is flimsy at best, but her attempts to convey this to her superiors and colleagues falls on deaf ears.

Hidden biases and a desire to close the case as soon as possible, means no one is listening... that is, until she discovers a much more sinister crime. As Ray uncovers a complex web of deceit within organised crime, she also lays bare deep-seated issues about her own identity - that she has buried for many years - wounds born out of a desperate desire to belong after a lifetime of being made to feel like an outsider.

This Birmingham set crime-drama, features a stellar cast including Gemma Whelan (White House Farm, Gentleman Jack, Game of Thrones) and Jamie Bamber (Marcella, The Smoke, Law & Order UK), the four-part series is directed by Bridgerton's Alex Pillai and produced by Code 404's Charlotte Surtees, and arrives on DVD and digital 11 July 2022.

18 1/2

On the 50th Anniversary of Watergate - one of the biggest political scandals in history that sent shockwaves across the globe and set a new bar for serious constitutional misconduct - a fresh take on the story has been brought to light in 18 1/2. This inventive, fun, and thrilling feature, with twists and turns galore is set for its UK release this Summer from 101 Films.

An enthralling original from award-winning director Dan Mirvish (Bernard and Huey, Between Us) - who has been described as a 'cheerful subversive' (New York Times) and named as one of Variety's Top 50 Creatives to Watch - this slick, smart and thoroughly entertaining caper takes use on a whirlwind ride, set against the backdrop of political corruption, deception and double-dealing.

The year is 1974, and America is up in arms over the Watergate scandal. When loyal White House transcriber Connie Lashley (Willa Fitzgerald - Reacher, Little Women), inadvertently stumbles across the only copy of the infamous 181/2 minute gap in the Nixon tapes, she quickly finds herself completely out of her depth...

Holding the very thing that could prove the momentous conspiracy, she contacts Times reporter Paul Marrow (John Magaro - The Big Short, First Cow) for help, and the unlikely duo dive headfirst into the heart of the scandalous affair and a whole world of trouble.

An engrossing and compelling mystery, with a darkly comic edge, 18 1/2 boasts stunning cinematography and an exceptional cast including Bruce Campbell (Ash vs Evil Dead, Bubba Ho-Tep), Richard Kind (Argo, Inside Out), Vondie Curtis Hall (Romeo and Juliet), Catherine Curtin (Stranger Things), Ted Raimi (Creepshow) and Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men).

Scandalously sharp and staggeringly savvy 18 1/2 is a must-watch movie.

Acorn TV June 2022 Highlights

Monday 6 June, Love Me

This acclaimed Australian drama tells a no-holds-barred story of love, grief and the complexity of family relationships featuring a stellar line-up of acting talent including Hugo Weaving (Seven Types of Ambiguity, Lord of the Rings), Bojana Novakovic (I, Tonya, Birds of Prey) and William Lodder (Wakefield) and Shalom Brune-Franklin (The Tourist, Line of Duty).

The Mathiesons seem to have it all, but when Christine falls ill, Glen tries his best to be a good husband and carer at the same time, while their daughter Clara and son, Aaron try and be supportive, in the most challenging circumstances, while trying to keep a handle on their own lives. When Christine dies suddenly it sends their lives into a spiral as they struggle to deal with pain and grief in their very different ways.

Glen is in a sea of pain, stalked by the loss of his wife and the guilt he carries with him. Clara is in a state of emotional ambivalence - the years of a fraught relationship have left a damaging scar. Then there's Aaron - he's genuinely hurt and can't understand why the others aren't seemingly as sad as him. As they try to plough on, their fallibility draws them out into the world, and ever closer to making the really big mistakes and suffering the most hilarious humiliations - those brilliant, raw moments that teach us to laugh at ourselves and truly love. Love Me is a call to the heart and a timely reminder we're all as messy and remarkable as each other.

TV favourites David Tennant (Broadchurch, Dr Who) and Ashley Jensen star in this gripping, critically acclaimed drama. Will Burton (Tennant) is a talented junior barrister of peerless intellect and winning charm, who specialises in getting his clients out of tight legal corners, hence his nickname - The Escape Artist. Much to the aggravation of his courtroom rival, Maggie Gardner (, Flack, His Dark Materials), Will is in high demand, never having lost a case.

But when Will's talents acquit Liam Foyle (Toby Kebbell), who is standing trial for an horrific and high-profile murder, that courtroom brilliance comes back to bite him. Foyle walks free, but surely, it's only a matter of time before this serial killer finds his next victim.

Monday 27 June, The Drowning

Jill Halfpenny and Rupert Penry-Jones star as a couple who lose their son and nine years later are still struggling to rebuild their lives in this gripping thriller.

When Jodie (Halfpenny) sees Daniel (Jonas Armstrong), she is convinced the teenager is her missing son and her hope is reignited. In a drama that asks how far a mother will go to find her child, Jodie embarks on a dangerous, life-changing path that will take her to the edge of reason.

Things get close to home when her son is among the many children quarantined at a sports facility. And as the panic spreads, a journalist is reported missing. Is he connected to the case?
