Acorn TV August 2020 Highlights

3 August: BALTHAZAR SERIES 2

Tomer Sisley (Messiah), returns as the handsome, intelligent and quick-witted forensic pathologist Raphael Balthazar who can speak to the dead, for a second gripping series of the critically acclaimed hit French drama.

10 August: FINDING JOY SERIES 1

Amy Huberman (Striking Out, Cold Feet) writes and stars alongside Aisling Bea (This Way Up, Living With Yourself) and Jenny Rainsford (Fleabag) in this hilarious six-part comedy series that follows the trials and tribulations of a millennial journalist turned accidental superstar vlogger.

17 August: THE RESTAURANT SERIES 2

This award-winning Swedish drama, described as the next Downton Abbey, returns for a second mesmerising series. This sprawling ensemble period piece begins at the end of WWII and runs across two decades, following the ever-changing lives of the Lowander family and their renowned restaurant. Season two spans a decade beginning in 1955, as new faces and old must face new challenges.

24 August: FAMILY BUSINESS SERIES 1

This award-winning French series follows mother and daughter Astrid and Aubrey, two hot shot lawyers who make the perilous decision to work together. As they set up their legal firm specialising in family law, the harsh realities soon set in. They must face the complexities of their wide-ranging clients, alongside their own delicate working partnership.

31 August: CAPITAL

Based on John Lanchester's hit novel and featuring an all-star cast, this BBC miniseries takes place in the fictional South London street, Pepys Road, right in the heart of London's melting-pot. The residents include wealthy couple Roger and Arabella played by Toby Jones (Captain America) and Rachael Stirling (Detectorists), elderly widow Petunia (Gemma Jones, Gentleman Jack) and her daughter Mary (Lesley Sharp, Scott and Bailey), corner shop keeper Ahmed (Adeel Akhtar, Four Lions) and his family, and Quentina (Wunmi Mosaku, Luther), an asylum seeker facing deportation. When they all receive identical postcards bearing the message 'We want what you have', how will they react?

Walkabout Limited Edition Blu-ray Box Set release

Seminal classic and one of the first Australian New Wave films, Walkabout, from legendary director Nicolas Roeg (The Man Who Fell to Earth, Don't Look Now) is a coming-of-age story of survival and transcending cultural differences starring lauded actor Jenny Agutter (Call the Midwife, The Railway Children) and the director's son Luc Roeg.

Although it received mixed reviews on its Cannes premiere in 1971, the film has gone on to become an internationally renowned, cult favourite loved by audiences and critics alike, and now Second Sight Films is giving Walkabout the Limited Edition Blu-ray box set treatment.

Following the suicide of their father, Mary (Agutter) and her younger brother Peter (Luc Roeg) are left stranded in the blistering heat of the vast Australian outback. Facing exhaustion and starvation, their salvation comes when they cross paths with an Aboriginal boy (David Gulpilil - The Leftovers, Cargo) on 'walkabout', a ritual in which he must leave his home and learn to survive off the land. He teaches them how to survive in the wilderness, but a clash of cultures leads to terrible and tragic consequences...




PAYDIRT DVD & digital release

Hollywood heavyweights Luke Goss and Val Kilmer face off in a brand new rip-roaring, all-action heist thriller, PAYDIRT, which gets its UK Premiere this Summer courtesy of 101 Films and Octane Entertainment.

Set in the scorching Californian desert, the heat is on as career criminal Damien Brooks aka The Brit (Luke Goss), fresh from prison after a five-year stretch, is determined to find the buried stash of cash that landed him in a cell after a DEA bust gone wrong. He's served his time...now he wants his pay.

As he rounds up his old crew of mismatched badasses, all with their own problems, a plan starts to form...but the word is out that a real-life treasure hunt is going down and other criminal firms want in on the act.

The Secrets She Keeps DVD & digital

The cat is out the bag...Brand-new nail-biting drama The Secrets She Keeps is set to have viewers hooked this summer. This six-part small-screen adaptation of Michael Robotham's best-seller follows the lives of two pregnant women in wildly different circumstances, whose meeting may be more than a coincidence.

This 'domestic noir' drama arrives on digital 8 July and DVD 10 August 2020 from Acorn Media International, following its run on BBCOne.

Successful mummy-blogger Meghan (Jessica De Gouw - The Crown, Vienna Blood) meets shelf-stacker Agatha (Laura Carmichael - Downton Abbey, The Spanish Princess) in the supermarket of her affluent Sydney suburb. The pair are both pregnant, bonding over the similar due dates of their babies, but as they grow closer, Agatha becomes more and more obsessed with Meghan's ''perfect'' life. However under the surface, problems with her high-flying TV exec husband Jack (Michael Dorman - Patriot, The Invisible Man) and tension with his best friend Simon (Ryan Corr - Cleverman, Hacksaw Ridge) mean Meghan is keeping plenty of secrets of her own...

Echoes of Fear DVD & digital release

Creating waves on the US festival circuit and garnering best feature awards galore Echoes of Fear is set to scare the living daylights out of UK audiences as it arrives on digital and DVD this summer from Second Sight Films.

Turning the haunted house genre on its head, this chilling scare-fest, will have you clamouring for a cushion as the horror creeps up to a truly disturbing climax. The supernatural chiller from Brian and Laurence Avenet-Bradley, has garnered huge critical acclaim and arrives on digital formats on 20 July, followed by its DVD release on 3 August 2020.

When her grandfather dies suddenly, Alisa (Trista Robinson - Purgatory Road) inherits his house and moves in to fix it up. But strange things start to happen, first there's weird sounds in the night and then she senses a supernatural presence. Looking for answers Alisa starts to investigate her grandfather's mysterious death, uncovering the horrific truth and shocking events of the past. Will they be the death of her?




My Brilliant Friend Series 2 DVD & digital release

The award-winning, beloved Neapolitan Novels by Italian author Elena Ferrante tell an epic, riveting tale of love, loss, hardships and the enduring power of female friendship. After its run on Sky Atlantic this summer, the second series of this stunning, Italian-language adaptation My Brilliant Friend: The Story of a New Name arrives on digital 10 July and DVD 3 August 2020 from Acorn Media International.

Elena Greco is an elderly writer whose best friend Lila has disappeared without a trace, so Elena begins to write the story of their lives growing up together in a mob-ruled, poverty-stricken neighbourhood in 1950s Naples. As children, Elena (Elisa Del Genio) and Lila's (Ludovica Nasti) friendship is put to the test as financial disparities provide them with very different opportunities in life. Lila's writing genius is stifled after her parents can no longer afford further education and put her to work, while Elena flourishes in school, no longer in the shadow of her friend's brilliance.

The second series follows Elena (Margherita Mazzucco) and Lila (Gaia Girace) as adolescents into the Swinging Sixties, where this fierce, complex friendship must endure romantic rivalry and shocking violence, as the notorious Solara gangster family becomes harder to avoid entanglements with. 6 July: AGATHA CHRISTIE'S THE ABC MURDERS

Acting maestro John Malkovich (The New Pope, Being John Malkovich)takes on the iconic role of detective extraordinaire Hercule Poirot in this critically acclaimed BBC Agatha Christie adaptation from renowned writer Sarah Phelps.

13 July: THE SOMMERDAHL MURDERS

This hit scandi-noir police drama follows Dan Sommerdahl (Peter Mygind) and his best friend, detective superintendent Fleming Torp (Andre Babikian) as they investigate complex murders in the Danish coastal town of Helsingor. When Dan's wife Marianne (Laura Drasbaek) has an affair, their personal lives become almost as complicated as the mysteries they're trying to solve.

27 July: STRAIGHT FORWARD

This gritty, dual language (English and Danish) drama, takes us on an adrenaline-fuelled ride across the globe in a tale of revenge, danger and redemption. Danish con-woman Sylvia Petersen (Cecilie Stenspil), has her life turned upside down when her father is murdered in cold blood. Reeling from his death, she plots revenge on crime kingpin Ravn (Mark Mitchinson).

27 JULY: THE RESTAURANT SERIES 1

This award-winning Swedish drama has been lauded as the next Downton Abbey. 31 JULY: ELIZABETH IS MISSING

This critically acclaimed, BAFTA-nominated drama based on Emma Healey's riveting debut novel originally aired on BBC One, and stars the multi-award-winning, legendary actor-turned-politician Glenda Jackson, who returns to the screen in a powerful, thought provoking role. She plays Maude, an 80-year-old grandmother with Alzheimer's who is determined to find her best friend Elizabeth, who has mysteriously disappeared. But dementia threatens to erase all the clues, giving the search a poignant urgency. Also starring Maggie Steed, Sophie Rundle and Mark Stanley.




The Luminaries DVD & digital release

AN EPIC tale of star-crossed lovers, destiny, gold and greed, The Luminaries is a lush six-part period drama based on the Man Booker prize-winning novel by Eleanor Catton. After its run on BBCOne this summer, this stunning story of fate and fortune arrives on DVD and digital on 20 July 2020 from Acorn Media International.

1865, New Zealand: welcome to the Gold Rush. Fresh-faced young woman Anna Wetherell (Eve Hewson - The Knick, Robin Hood) sets out for a new life, and has a romantic encounter with fellow passenger Emery Staines (Himesh Patel - Yesterday, Eastenders) on the voyage to New Zealand.
