Acorn TV June 2022 Highlights

Monday 6 June, Love Me

This acclaimed Australian drama tells a no-holds-barred story of love, grief and the complexity of family relationships featuring a stellar line-up of acting talent including Hugo Weaving (Seven Types of Ambiguity, Lord of the Rings), Bojana Novakovic (I, Tonya, Birds of Prey) and William Lodder (Wakefield) and Shalom Brune-Franklin (The Tourist, Line of Duty).

The Mathiesons seem to have it all, but when Christine falls ill, Glen tries his best to be a good husband and carer at the same time, while their daughter Clara and son, Aaron try and be supportive, in the most challenging circumstances, while trying to keep a handle on their own lives. When Christine dies suddenly it sends their lives into a spiral as they struggle to deal with pain and grief in their very different ways.

Glen is in a sea of pain, stalked by the loss of his wife and the guilt he carries with him. Clara is in a state of emotional ambivalence - the years of a fraught relationship have left a damaging scar. Then there's Aaron - he's genuinely hurt and can't understand why the others aren't seemingly as sad as him. As they try to plough on, their fallibility draws them out into the world, and ever closer to making the really big mistakes and suffering the most hilarious humiliations - those brilliant, raw moments that teach us to laugh at ourselves and truly love. Love Me is a call to the heart and a timely reminder we're all as messy and remarkable as each other.

TV favourites David Tennant (Broadchurch, Dr Who) and Ashley Jensen star in this gripping, critically acclaimed drama. Will Burton (Tennant) is a talented junior barrister of peerless intellect and winning charm, who specialises in getting his clients out of tight legal corners, hence his nickname - The Escape Artist. Much to the aggravation of his courtroom rival, Maggie Gardner (, Flack, His Dark Materials), Will is in high demand, never having lost a case.

But when Will's talents acquit Liam Foyle (Toby Kebbell), who is standing trial for an horrific and high-profile murder, that courtroom brilliance comes back to bite him. Foyle walks free, but surely, it's only a matter of time before this serial killer finds his next victim.

Monday 27 June, The Drowning

Jill Halfpenny and Rupert Penry-Jones star as a couple who lose their son and nine years later are still struggling to rebuild their lives in this gripping thriller.

When Jodie (Halfpenny) sees Daniel (Jonas Armstrong), she is convinced the teenager is her missing son and her hope is reignited. In a drama that asks how far a mother will go to find her child, Jodie embarks on a dangerous, life-changing path that will take her to the edge of reason.

Monday 20 June, Maria Wern

Maria Wern (Eva Rose, Akta Manniskor) is a single mother of two and the Deputy Crime Commissioner on the Swedish island of Gotland. When she returns to her job after six months' leave, she is thrown straight into a murder case. Then there's a sudden outbreak of bird flu to contend with in the area and all resources must focus on containing the infection before it is too late.

Things get close to home when her son is among the many children quarantined at a sports facility. And as the panic spreads, a journalist is reported missing. Is he connected to the case?

Monday 6 June, A Place to Call Home

The multi-award-winning series returns for its fifth series. The sweeping romantic drama set in 1950s rural Australia follows the lives of Nurse Sarah Adams and the Blighs, a wealthy and complicated Pastoralist family living in Inverness, New South Wales where love, death and secrets are never far below the surface. Marta Dusseldorp (Jack Irish) leads the cast as Sarah Adams, a woman with a mysterious past who has returned to Australia after 20 years abroad.

In series 5, we pick up four years later in 1958 and dark clouds are forming over Ash Park. The family are vulnerable to the malicious intentions of Sir Richard Bennett and his entanglement in their financial affairs makes their hold on their home precarious. Could Regina be their only hope of salvation, or is she playing a double game against them?

Monday 13 June, Crownies

The original law drama that brought us Janet King played by the inimitable Marta Dusseldorp (A Place to Call Home) in this prequel to the highly acclaimed spin-off. The young lawyers of the Office of Public Prosecutions find that their passion for justice collides with the realities of a system that struggles to protect the vulnerable.

The Boy Behind the Door

The Boy Behind The Door is the dramatic and evocative feature film debut from writing-directing duo David Charbonier and Justin Powell. This Shudder Original from the talented team - who went on to create the critically acclaimed horror The Djinn - has been described by the NME as 'practically flawless' and is now set for its UK Blu-ray, DVD and digital release, from Acorn Media International.

The film, set for its UK physical premiere on 2 May 2022, is unrelentingly fast-paced and conjures up the nerve-jangling sense of dread of a childhood nightmare.

A night of unimaginable terror awaits twelve-year-old Bobby (Lonnie Chavis - This Is Us) and best friend, Kevin (Ezra Dewey - The Djinn) when they are abducted on their way home from school and taken to a house surrounded by miles of bleak, dark country in every direction.

Bobby manages to escape his confines and quietly navigates the dark halls in a bid for escape, but when he hears Kevin's screams, he realises he can't leave his friend behind...

Avoiding his kidnapper (Kristin Bauer van Straten - True Blood) and her menacing acquaintance (Micah Hauptman - Everest) at every turn and with no means of calling for help, Bobby embarks on a high-stakes rescue mission, determined to get himself and Kevin out alive...or die trying.

Filmed from the perspective of the two young protagonists The Boy Behind the Door tackles an undeniably dark and disturbing subject matter, while giving audiences a gripping and commanding tale of endurance and alliance in the face of evil.

What ensues is a suspenseful, chilling and expertly crafted game of cat and mouse, so tense that viewers will watch with the same trepidation as The Boy Behind The Door.
