Alma Mater

Filmed before a live audience amid the architectural splendour and highly charged atmosphere of London's Westminster Cathedral, the stunning concert performance Alma Mater allows people to hear former pontiff Pope Benedict XVI as they have never heard him before. This wonderful event is presented courtesy of Odyssey. The extraordinary, unique and spiritually uplifting musical creation features His Holiness, a renowned lover of music, both reciting and singing in five languages in this special combination of Lauretan litanies, Marian popular chants and original pieces by three distinguished contemporary composers. It is released to DVD on 23 March 2015. Produced by Vincent Messina (Santa Sangre) and conceptualised theologically by Don Guilio Neroni, Alma Mater brings together the talents of three very different composers/arrangers whose music forms the core of this exceptional composition resulting in exceptional beauty: Simon Boswell from Britain, Italian-based Moroccan Nour Eddine Fatty, and Stefano Mainetti from Italy. The Pope's words, recorded during his pontificate at official services in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and during various pilgrimages, blend with the glorious solo, choral and orchestral music performed by two world-famous ensembles: the Vatican's Philharmonic Academy of Rome Choir and Britain's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Former Pope Benedict XVI said "I am convinced that music really is the universal language of beauty which can bring together all people of good will on earth" which fittingly describes the exceptional beauty of this skilfully composed musical concert. Alma Mater is a uniquely spiritual experience for music lovers everywhere.
