Acorn TV September 2020 Highlights

3 Sept: THE SOUNDS

A riveting multi-layered drama, set against the spectacular backdrop of one of New Zealand's greatest hidden secrets, the remote, idyllic Marlborough Sounds in South Island. Successful Canadian couple Maggie (Rachelle Lefevre) and Tom (Matt Whelan) have moved to the other side of the world to escape the rat race, but when Tom disappears, Maggie must come to terms with the fact that she may not have known her husband as well as she thought.

7 Sept: BOOMERS BOX SET

A hugely entertaining sitcom that follows a group of recently retired couples living in Norfolk. The old friends must deal with life's ups and downs in their later years and tackle a modern world they don't quite fit into. Stars Alison Steadman, Philip Jackson, Russ Abbot, Stephanie Beacham, Paula Wilcox, James Smith and Nigel Planer.

7 Sept: PUBLIC ENEMIES BOX SET

This hard-hitting drama follows ex-con Eddie (Daniel Mays, Line of Duty), who is released from prison after a 10 year stretch for the murder of his 17-year-old girlfriend. His probation officer Paula (Anna Friel, Marcella), must oversee his release and decide if it's safe for him to be released back into the community. As he proclaims his innocence and the pair grow closer, how will his volatile behaviour affect his ever-distant friends, his sister Kelly, and the family of the victim...and is Paula equipped to handle his case?

14 Sept: THE CRIMSON PETAL AND THE WHITE BOX SET

Romola Garai (The Miniaturist) stars as Victorian prostitute Sugar, who captures the interest of the wealthy Rackham (Chris O'Dowd, The IT Crowd), but keeping her a secret from his wife and daughter proves harder than he imagined. Also starring Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) and Gillian Anderson (Sex Education).

21 Sept: TAKEN DOWN BOX SET

This critically acclaimed, gripping six-part Irish crime drama stars Lynn Rafferty (Dead Still) as the detective investigating the violent death of a young Nigerian migrant on the streets of Dublin. Inspector Jen Rooney and her team soon discover a world where refugees exist, and the impact that their investigation has on fragile lives.

The Strangers Limited Edition Blu-ray Box Set release

Horrifying home-invasion The Strangers, the 2008 debut film from writer-director Bryan Bertino (Mockingbird, The Monster), stars Liv Tyler (Lord of the Rings, The Leftovers) and Scott Speedman (Underworld, Animal Kingdom) as a couple terrorised by masked attackers. Garnering cult status since its release, The Strangers now arrives as a Limited Edition Blu-ray box set from Second Sight Films on 28 September 2020.

After a proposal gone wrong at a friend's wedding, what should have been a romantic getaway for Kristen (Tyler) and James (Speedman) is disturbed by a 4am knock on the door and a terrifying invasion of their home by three strangers in disguise. Named for their nightmarish masks, Man in the Mask (Kip Weeks - Ragged Isle), Dollface (Gemma Ward - The Great Gatsby), and Pin-up Girl (Laura Margolis - Dirty Sexy Money), the twisted trio have brutality in mind and the couple are at their mercy, but who are they and what is their motive?

Kristen and James must fight to survive a night of psychological torment and bloodthirsty violence...who will make it out alive?

Taken Down on Acorn TV

Also starring Brian Gleeson (Phantom Thread, Logan Lucky),Orla Fitzgerald (The Wind that Shakes the Barley), and Slimane Dazi (Only Lovers Left Alive)

The Bureau Seasons 1- 5

Hailed as 'the smartest and most authentic-feeling procedural espionage series anywhere in the world' by The New York Times, the suspense filled series, from creator and showrunner Eric Rochant (Mafiosa, The Patriots) takes us into the undercover world of French agents at the DGSE, France's leading intelligence centre.

Within the DGSE (Directorate General of External Security), the 'Office of Legends' operate the most valuable members of the French intelligence services: secret agents. Spending prolonged amounts of time immersed in hostile countries, these operatives are tasked with identifying potential sources of intelligence among the people they come into contact with. Operating under a fabricated identity, they live for years in a permanent state of double identity, between an apparently normal life and their covert intelligence activity.

The thrilling first series begins with one of the top agents, Malotru, (Mathieu Kassovitz - Amelie, The Fifth Element) recalled from a lengthy undercover mission in Damascus. The Sounds on Acorn TV

Get ready for your new TV obsession as Acorn Original The Sounds, a brand new eight-part psychological thriller, premieres exclusively in the UK on Acorn TV this September.

A riveting multi-layered drama, set against the spectacular backdrop of one of New Zealand's greatest hidden secrets, the remote, idyllic Marlborough Sounds in South Island, we meet successful Canadian couple Maggie and Tom played by Rachelle Lefevre (Proven Innocent, White House Down) and Matt Whelan (Narcos, The Luminaries) who have upped sticks to start a new life in this paradise on the other side of the world.

Determined to escape the rat race, particularly Tom's family business and overbearing father, the pair are ready for a new chapter. Tom has gone ahead to lay down the groundwork for his new business venture, a salmon fishery in the town of Pelorus, where he hopes to reinvigorate their struggling economy. But the day after Maggie arrives, Tom mysteriously disappears on a boating trip and Maggie must come to terms with the fact that she may not have known her husband as well as she thought...

Local cop Jack McGregor (Matt Nable, Arrow, Riddick) spearheads the search, revealing disturbing secrets and bringing long-buried wounds to the surface. As Maggie struggles to navigate the escalating events, it becomes clear that in this small, seemingly close-knit community, nothing and no one are as they appear. Walkabout Limited Edition Blu-ray Box Set release

Seminal classic and one of the first Australian New Wave films, Walkabout, from legendary director Nicolas Roeg (The Man Who Fell to Earth, Don't Look Now) is a coming-of-age story of survival and transcending cultural differences starring lauded actor Jenny Agutter (Call the Midwife, The Railway Children) and the director's son Luc Roeg.

Although it received mixed reviews on its Cannes premiere in 1971, the film has gone on to become an internationally renowned, cult favourite loved by audiences and critics alike, and now Second Sight Films is giving Walkabout the Limited Edition Blu-ray box set treatment.

Following the suicide of their father, Mary (Agutter) and her younger brother Peter (Luc Roeg) are left stranded in the blistering heat of the vast Australian outback. Facing exhaustion and starvation, their salvation comes when they cross paths with an Aboriginal boy (David Gulpilil - The Leftovers, Cargo) on 'walkabout', a ritual in which he must leave his home and learn to survive off the land. He teaches them how to survive in the wilderness, but a clash of cultures leads to terrible and tragic consequences...

3 August: BALTHAZAR SERIES 2

Tomer Sisley (Messiah), returns as the handsome, intelligent and quick-witted forensic pathologist Raphael Balthazar who can speak to the dead, for a second gripping series of the critically acclaimed hit French drama.

10 August: FINDING JOY SERIES 1

Amy Huberman (Striking Out, Cold Feet) writes and stars alongside Aisling Bea (This Way Up, Living With Yourself) and Jenny Rainsford (Fleabag) in this hilarious six-part comedy series that follows the trials and tribulations of a millennial journalist turned accidental superstar vlogger.

17 August: THE RESTAURANT SERIES 2

This award-winning Swedish drama, described as the next Downton Abbey, returns for a second mesmerising series. This sprawling ensemble period piece begins at the end of WWII and runs across two decades, following the ever-changing lives of the Lowander family and their renowned restaurant. Season two spans a decade beginning in 1955, as new faces and old must face new challenges.

24 August: FAMILY BUSINESS SERIES 1

This award-winning French series follows mother and daughter Astrid and Aubrey, two hot shot lawyers who make the perilous decision to work together. As they set up their legal firm specialising in family law, the harsh realities soon set in. They must face the complexities of their wide-ranging clients, alongside their own delicate working partnership.

31 August: CAPITAL

Based on John Lanchester's hit novel and featuring an all-star cast, this BBC miniseries takes place in the fictional South London street, Pepys Road, right in the heart of London's melting-pot. The residents include wealthy couple Roger and Arabella played by Toby Jones (Captain America) and Rachael Stirling (Detectorists), elderly widow Petunia (Gemma Jones, Gentleman Jack) and her daughter Mary (Lesley Sharp, Scott and Bailey), corner shop keeper Ahmed (Adeel Akhtar, Four Lions) and his family, and Quentina (Wunmi Mosaku, Luther), an asylum seeker facing deportation. When they all receive identical postcards bearing the message 'We want what you have', how will they react?

Set in the scorching Californian desert, the heat is on as career criminal Damien Brooks aka The Brit (Luke Goss), fresh from prison after a five-year stretch, is determined to find the buried stash of cash that landed him in a cell after a DEA bust gone wrong. As he rounds up his old crew of mismatched badasses, all with their own problems, a plan starts to form...but the word is out that a real-life treasure hunt is going down and other criminal firms want in on the act.
