Acorn TV June 2021 Highlights

John Cleland's notorious erotic novel Fanny Hill, about a young Lancashire woman who endeavours to attain respectability after falling into a life of ill repute in 18th-century London, is adapted for the small screen by Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones' Diary, Pride and Prejudice) in this critically acclaimed and undoubtably saucy miniseries. Rebecca Knight (Wuthering Heights, Agatha Raisin) plays the bawdy eponymous lead, with a mischievous glint in her eye and plenty of knowing winks, as we follow her journey from wholesome waif to worldly woman. The drama features an impressive cast including Alison Steadman (Gavin & Stacey, Orphan Black), Hugo Speer (Marcella, London Kills) and Samantha Bond (Downton Abbey, Outnumbered).

We return to the stunning Kent coast for more gripping mysteries in this gem of a series, based on acclaimed author Julie Wassmer's (EastEnders) much loved novels The Whitstable Pearl Mystery and Disappearance at Oare.

Kerry Godliman (After Life, Save Me) stars as Pearl Nolan, a restaurateur turned detective, who teams up with new 'down-from-London' detective DCI Mike McGuire (Howard Charles, The Musketeers, Liar), to solve crimes in the dark underbelly of this seemingly charming seaside town.

The last three instalments of series one see Pearl juggling work and family life around the festive season, and a new investigation when a mystery note lands on her plate; getting to the bottom of a boating 'accident' where a mother and daughter almost die and a gruesome discovery amongst the oyster beds that forces Pearl to face her past and ask questions surrounding her father's disappearance at sea. Frances Barber (Silk, Mr Holmes) also stars.

Hit Scandi-noir police drama The Sommerdahl Murders based on the bestselling Dan Sommerdahl books from Anna Grue, one of Scandinavia's most successful crime fiction writers, aired in Denmark to great acclaim and following the UK premiere of Series one on Acorn TV, series two makes its UK premiere and the complete box set is now available.

This enthralling mystery series set on the stunning Danish coast follows DCI Dan Sommerdahl (Peter Mygind - The Kingdom, Last Christmas), his best friend, Detective Flemming Torp (Andre Babikian - Those Who Kill, The Protectors), and his wife, Marianne (Laura Drasbaek - Park Road, Grow), a criminal technician. But Dan's years of devotion to the job have hurt his marriage, and with Marianne wanting a divorce, Dan discovers his rival for her affections is none other than his best friend. And they all must still work together to solve crimes.

The smart and charming Commandant Candice Renoir (Cecile Bois, Germinal, Gloria), returns for a second season of this award-winning, much-loved French crime drama. Resuming her position at the BSU in Sete, following a 10-year hiatus, the police officer and single mother must face the challenge of juggling work and family life, while also investigating crimes in a new technologically advanced era. Trying to fit in with her new colleagues and proving herself in this new world of crime-fighting is an uphill struggle, but Candice is determined to do the job she loves... solving crimes.

Crime-writing legend Lynda La Plante's long-running, hit police drama continues with DCI Roisin Connor (Victoria Smurfit, Marple, Ballykissangel) and DS Mike Walker (David Hayman, The Nest, Hatton Garden), tackling challenging case from the crime, to the investigation and finishing with the trial.

This hit series sees the tenacious detectives take on a slew of gripping mysteries alongside an all-star line-up of British acting talent including Tom Ellis (Lucifer, Miranda), Ben Miles (The Crown, The Romanoffs), John Lynch (Sliding Doors, The Fall), Kerry Fox (Death In Paradise, National Treasure), Roy Marsden (Only Fools And Horses, The Sandbaggers), Matthew Beard (The Imitation Game, Johnny English Strikes Again) and Ruth Gemmell (Bridgerton, Silent Witness).

The Philosophers

Sci-fi fantasy thriller The Philosophers stars British acting favourite James D'Arcy (Cloud Atlas, Master and Commander, Agent Carter) as a philosophy teacher mercilessly shaping his students' views on life and death in this enthralling story from filmmaker John Huddles (Far Harbor, At Sachem Farm), that will provoke thought and stimulate senses.

Described by the L.A. Times as a 'provocative survival story' The Philosophers shines a light on how humans react when their lives are threatened by a catastrophic scenario and has never been more relevant. Lauded by audiences of all ages across the globe and even studied as part of Palo Alto College's Introduction to Philosophy course, the film is now set for its anticipated re-release on UK digital in its directors' original form, on 24 May 2021 from (Yet) Another Distribution Company.

Featuring an impressive cast of acting talent including Bonnie Wright (Harry Potter), Erin Moriarty (The Boys), Freddie Stroma (Bridgerton, Pitch Perfect), Katie Findlay (How to Get Away With Murder, Man Seeking Woman), George Blagden (Vikings, Versailles), Maia Mitchell (The Fosters) and Philippa Coulthard (Howards End), the film premiered at Fantasy Filmfest to a rapturous response and was nominated for Best Motion Picture at the Sitges Film Festival.

At an international school in Jakarta, Indonesia, on the last day of class, 20 students from around the world are manipulated by their idiosyncratic philosophy teacher, Mr Zimit (D'Arcy), into conducting a final thought experiment before they can graduate. Using the tools of logic alone they must work out who among them is valuable enough to the future of humanity to merit a slot inside a specialised bunker - that only has room for 10 - during an atomic apocalypse, the rest must stay behind... doomed to be vapourised by the blasts.

Following a rapid trajectory of atomic detonations, psychological assaults and extreme philosophising, we're taken on an ever-changing-ride across multiple realities to fascinating and thrilling effect. Petra (Sophie Lowe - Blow The Man Down, Beautiful Kate) the brightest girl in class and her boyfriend, James (Rhys Wakefield - True Detective, The Purge), take centre stage as star-crossed lovers whose romance and fate plays out with a myriad of outcomes.

The Philosophers drills into both the beauty and the desperation of human behaviour, as it explores serious questions of emotion versus reason, power versus weakness and leaders versus followers and delivers a riveting, mind-expanding thriller.

Whitstable Pearl

Head to the stunning Kent coast to discover the gem of a series Whitstable Pearl, a brand-new Acorn TV Original crime-drama starring acting favourite Kerry Godliman (After Life, Save Me, Adult Material) in the lead role as Pearl Nolan, alongside Frances Barber (Silk, Mr Holmes) as her mother Dolly and Howard Charles (The Musketeers, Liar, Shadow and Bone) as DCI Mike McGuire. It's set to premiere exclusively on Acorn TV beginning Monday, May 24, 2021 with the first two episodes, followed by weekly episodes through Monday, June 21.

This enthralling mystery series is based on acclaimed author Julie Wassmer's (EastEnders) much loved novels The Whitstable Pearl Mystery and Disappearance at Oare and is brought to life for the first time on screen by iconic Norwegian filmmaker Oystein Karlsen (Exit, Dag, Lilyhammer). Whitstable Pearl explores the dark undercurrents of murder and debauchery swirling beneath the surface of the picturesque 16th century English seaside resort of Whitstable, one of Kent's most stunning coastal towns, famous for its native oysters and buffeted by the prevailing winds and spray of the North Sea.

We meet big-hearted local celebrity Pearl Nolan (Godliman), who runs the eponymous Whitstable Pearl restaurant, but her real passion lies in detective work, after her police career was suddenly cut short many years before.

When Pearl discovers the body of close family friend, Vinnie, she's convinced it was foul play and following her instincts she embarks on her own murder investigation. Then a second body turns up and she finds herself embroiled in the dark underbelly of this picturesque town.

Teaming up with new arrival DCI Mike McGuire, Pearl is soon putting her distant police-training to good use and decides now is the time to set up for own detective agency. The world is her oyster.

The British seaside holiday will never be the same again. Set beneath huge skies and amid the lengthening shadows of a picture postcard town just miles from London, the friction between the locals and the wealthy city dwellers who have moved in, is palpable as centuries of village tradition grates against the inevitable pressure of money and gentrification.

Crimes most horrid have washed up on these shores, but there's a Pearl of wisdom who's ready to solve them.

This six-part drama is an original series commissioned by Acorn TV with Acorn Media Enterprises and Buccaneer Media (Marcella).
